  15 cars full of donations and $10,000 raised for teachers on the Suncoast

This year, we wanted to do more to help teachers on the Suncoast. On Friday, August 2, all six Gettel locations opened their doors to the community. ABC7 was there as donations poured in and many teachers, past and present, stopped by to give their thanks.

All day long, ABC7 was at the dealerships. Donors filled more than 14 vehicles with classroom supplies and gave more than $10,000!

Chalkboard Champions: Crusade for School Supplies

Every month during the school year, ABC7 honors an educator in Sarasota County and Manatee County as the “Chalkboard Champion" and now you can get involved!

ABC7 has teamed up with Gettel Automotive to celebrate teachers on the Suncoast - calling them “Chalkboard Champions." The community nominates a teacher and ABC7 selects two winners each month - one for Sarasota and Manatee County.

Winner of the ABC 7 Gettel Automotive "Chalkboard Champion" for May in Sarasota is Josh Stolze of "Beyond the Spectrum" Education Center in Lakewood Ranch. Josh is with ABC 7 Anchor Ray Collins and Gettel Automotive's Fred Bartholomew.

A non-profit organization in Newtown is on a mission to empower people in crisis and a community that continually struggles with crime, drugs, domestic violence and unemployment.

Tip from Sarasota dealership leads to man’s arrest for allegedly trying to buy luxury car using stolen ID

Detectives say in July, they got a call from a local dealership about a person trying to buy a 2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat online that they felt was suspicious. After investigating, detectives say they determined the driver's license being used for the sale belonged to someone else.

Large police presence at Palmetto High School after possible threat

The district tells ABC7 that they received messages through the Fortify Florida app about a possible threat. The app was launched after the shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland as a way to report threats.

Three people came forward to say that New College was discriminating against admission applicants who disclosed a disability or mental illness as part of the application process.

  WATCH: Armed man tries to rob Sarasota business

Monday around 7:40pm, the man walked into the business on the 1600 block of North Washington, walks up to the counter and sets down a bag, demanding money from the cashier. The cashier spoke to another employee and the man grabbed the bag and left without any cash.

Sarasota man convicted of sexual battery on victim under the age of 12

William Karaein was arrested in February 2019 after the victim told a child protection agent that he had forced her to perform oral sex and showed her images of genitals on his cellphone. The victim said both happened many times.
