Finding strength in the saddle: Inside Sarasota’s life-changing horse therapy program
SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Tucked away in a quiet corner of Sarasota, a remarkable kind of healing is taking place one hoofbeat at a time.
At Suncoast Therapeutic Equine Partners (STEP), gentle therapy horses are opening doors to confidence, connection, and courage for individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities. Serving participants ages 4 and up, the local nonprofit uses equine-assisted services to help riders engage their minds and bodies in a nurturing, peaceful arena.
Healing Through the Horse
Riding a horse is far more than an outdoor activity—it offers unique physical and emotional breakthroughs. As horses move, their rhythmic stride mimics the natural motion of the human walk, helping riders build core strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility.
Mentally and emotionally, the non-judgmental nature of a horse creates a calming environment where stress melts away, focus sharpens, and self-esteem flourishes.
A Hands-On Look from the Arena
Our team from Suncoast View spent the morning on-site to witness the program’s impact firsthand. From gentle introductions and grooming routines to guided riding sessions, instructors and volunteers work closely with every participant to match their individual needs and comfort levels.
The transformative bond was so contagious that our reporter stepped into the stirrups and got in the saddle, experiencing firsthand the sense of calm and empowerment that these four-legged partners bring to our community every day.
