Sanii Shields named ABC7 Athlete of the Month for June

BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) - This week we present to you our ABC7 Athlete of the Month for June. The honor goes to Bayshore High School’s (BHS) Sanii Shields.

She is a rising senior that we told you about as she was wrapping her junior year in the classroom and out on the track. Shields closed out the season by bringing home a first place prize from States.

Here’s a little of what Shields told ABC7 that helped her going into the season to her accomplish the goal. “[I focused on] practicing starts while trying to become better,” Shields said. “It feels great to be a Bruin.”

Shields says she felt great pride to represent her school and community in the best way possible. “[I loved] going to States and doing it for Bayshore,” Shields said.

For that hard work throughout the previous school year, we have a surprise for her. ABC7 partnering with Carl Reynolds Law to gift Shields with a check of $500 for all of her efforts on the track and in the classroom.

Her head coach, Les R. Hewitt, says he’s ecstatic for Sanii and the school as a whole. “It’s an honor for the school itself, Bayshore High School,” Hewitt said. “It’s an honor for the Suncoast. I’m proud of her and the whole establishment itself.”

As for Shields, she has one goal for next season. [I want to be] going to States again and getting another gold medal,” Shields said. “That’s my goal.”
