Suncoast Blood Centers drops to critically short blood supply
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (WWSB) - The Suncoast is facing a critical blood shortage heading into the Fourth of July holiday week, a historically difficult stretch for blood donation as people travel and extreme summer heat keeps would-be donors at home.
SunCoast Blood Centers says the region’s supply recently fell to a critical one- to two-day level, putting pressure on the center that relys on donations to support local hospitals.
“We need double what we have on our shelves right now,” said Joan Leonard, Community Liaison for SunCoast Blood Centers. “Everybody is taking vacations, getting out of town or just getting out in town, but what doesn’t take a vacation is illness.”
SunCoast Blood Centers reports its daily inventory has fallen from about 1,200 units to around 650 units — a 46% drop.
Leonard said seasonal changes are a major factor.

“What we’re missing in July is our high school students who donate at school,” Leonard said. “We have 18 high schools that have regular blood drives on location at schools. We’re missing our snow birds who are also very generous donors.”
SunCoast Blood Centers is asking for as many donors as possible across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, DeSoto and surrounding areas, noting it serves 16 local hospitals.
“We serve 16 of our local hospitals — the needs are great now,” Leonard said.
People can donate whole blood or platelets. The donation process can take less than 15 minutes for the draw, according to the organization.
To encourage donations during the holiday week, SunCoast Blood Centers is offering donors a $30 e-gift card, platelet donors are also eligible to receive an up to $70 e-gift card.
Leonard said donors also receive a basic health screening.
“On top of everything you get a free wellness checkup,” Leonard said. “We also want to make sure that you are healthy as well.”
SunCoast Blood Centers is also working to collect 250 donors as part of a community effort tied to America’s 250th anniversary.
The organization plans to be open Friday and Saturday, with mobile units out Friday to make donating easier.
