Gemma Mulhollen named ABC7 Athlete of the Month for April

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - This week we present to you our ABC7 Athlete of the Month for April. The honor goes to Sarasota High School’s (SHS) Gemma Mulhollen.

She’s a junior and standout pitcher for the SHS Lady Sailors softball team. The girls recently won their district championship and Gemma was on the mound spearheading those efforts.

She threw for seven innings and helping her team secure the W. As she’s displayed through many outings this season, she’ll do whatever it takes to help her team get the win.

“A lot of us were on the team that to States last year,” Gemma said. “We want to experience that again. We feel like that maybe we can win it this year. We’ve been pretty successful so far. We’re on a winning streak right now.”

What’s even more remarkable is that she was doing this while battling a back injury for most of the season. Gemma says she’s all good to go now, and for her resiliency and all around hard work we have something special for her.

ABC7 partnering with Carl Reynolds Law to gift Gemma with a check of $500 for being a stand out student-athlete on and off the field.

Gemma’s parents, Greg and Krista Mulhollen, are proud of all that Gemma is doing and has been able to overcome this season too.

“We weren’t even sure if you would recover to be able to come back at the end of the season,” Krista said. “For her, it was doing one day at a time.”

“They have a we over me mentality,” Greg said. “They’re just playing for each other and doing what’s best for the team. It’s a different girl every night.”

Now, it’s onto the remainder of the season and school year, which Gemma says she will finish strong.

“We went through what it was like to lose at states last year,” Gemma said. “We don’t want to experience that again.”
