BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) - This week’s ABC7 Athlete of the Week is Bayshore High School’s (BHS) Landon Hornes. He’s a sophomore for the Bruins and one of the guys you can say is responsible for this bounce back season on the hardwood for this program.

The way he runs this team’s offense as the point guard helps open up the floor for everyone else. Horns wants everyone to know they’re just getting started.

“This is just the beginning,” Hornes said. “This is what we want to accomplish, but this is just the beginning. This is nothing that we want to just settle for.”

Despite his youth Hornes’s voice is secretly becoming the most important one when he’s out on the court. He’s had to take on much responsibility in his role, but he embraces the challenge. “Obviously, always,” Hornes said. “I have to fight even harder because I’m an underclassman. There’s always a target on my back.”

Teammates like Kaiden Friedman, who is a senior for BHS, he knows with Horns here, this program is in good hands going forward. “Landon has grown a lot,” Friedman said. “He is a great leader. On and off the court, he shows it. He’s a great teammate and a good friend.”

For Hornes’s first year head coach, Tre Alexandrea, he feels that he has a cornerstone to build this program around for the next few years.

“He’s learning,” Alexandrea said. “Everyday he’s trying to be better at perfecting his craft. Whether that is asking to watch film or shoot extra shots after practice. He’s been committed to getting better.”

When it comes to the future of the program, Hornes has a message for the community. “For the name of Bayshore, don’t sleep,” Hornes said. “Stay woke. Don’t sleep on us yet.”

Hornes and the Bruins close out the regular season on Thursday at Bradenton Christian School against the Panthers.
