SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - This week we present to you our ABC7 Athlete of the Month for December. The honor goes to Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School’s Talia Busser.

When we last talked to Busser, she was recuperating from an ankle injury that had her sidelined.

“It’s a basketball injury,” Busser said. “They happen. While I’m off the court, I’m trying to instill confidence in my players to make sure they we can still get the win and work together as a team.”

As tough as it was for her to not be able to be out on the court, she felt it was very important to continue to be there to help lead her teammates.

“Before the game, we lead in prayer,” Busser said. “We have moments where we talk to each other before the game. We have our pep talks, which I usually lead. I just have to be a strong voice on the sideline to make sure they hear me.”

Busser is back now. For her efforts of leading during a time that she was dealing with some adversity, we have something special for her.

ABC7 partnering with Carl Reynolds Law to award Busser with a check in the amount of $500 for her resiliency efforts and being the ultimate teammate.

This is the last ride for Talia as a high school student-athlete, and she wants to finish by going out on top.

“Definitely winning back-to-back state championships, that would be the first goal of mine,” Busser said. I just hope we all succeed as a team."
