SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - A local organization is preparing to host its third annual Thanksgiving event aimed at serving families struggling with housing costs while connecting them with community resources.

One Stop Cares, which works to prevent homelessness for tenants of One Stop Housing, will hold its Give Back event on Nov. 22. The organization provides resources and follow-up services to ensure long-term sustainability for families at risk of losing their homes.

“We see it a lot with our current tenants. That’s why we have One Stop Cares, which prevents homelessness for the ones that are housed with us,” said Audrey Abraham, executive director of One Stop Cares. “If we are made aware of a crisis that puts them at risk of losing their home that they have with us, that’s when we jump in.”

The event serves as more than a meal service, according to Abraham.

“It’s not just serving a meal, but it’s serving hope. This is when city officials come together. Leaders, neighbors, friends, family. And it’s a time to connect and to share compassion for each other,” Abraham said.

Mark Vengroff, CEO and managing partner of One Stop Housing, said the event helps families learn about available resources while providing a space for children to play and parents to network.

“There’s so much help out there for people that just don’t realize where to go. And this is a great event to do that, to learn what’s available,” Vengroff said. “There’s just great resources out there that people could take advantage of to really get a step up, a step ahead.”

The organization expects significant attendance based on previous years. Abraham said last year’s event drew over 500 families, compared to 300 the year before.

A dedicated tent will house organizations and resources for attendees to access during the event. The gathering is open to the public, not limited to One Stop clients.

Community members can participate by volunteering, donating or spreading awareness about the event. Abraham emphasized the importance of community involvement.

“Nobody should be left alone. This is a time to create a sense of togetherness and just spread that joy for one another,” Abraham said.

The event is scheduled for Nov. 22, with Thanksgiving following a few days later.
