SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The old political saying, “Everything is local,” applies here.

Thursday’s shooting at a Publix in Royal Palm Beach - 180 miles away from Sarasota - hits home for some on the Suncoast.

Why? Because Publix is Florida. It’s based in Lakeland and there are around 800 Publix stores in the state.

Will what happened on the other coast concern Publix shoppers here? John Baugh, a regular shopper at Publix, says it won’t affect him.

“It’s well-run, you know, we have an outstanding police department that’s on top of things and takes care of things,” said Baugh. “And to be perfectly frank, I have zero concerns.”

Some Publix stores have had armed security for some time. The Publix ABC7 visited in Sarasota did have armed security, but we are told that’s not unusual.

Whether armed security will be beefed up across the board, that we are unsure of. And the grocery giant wouldn’t comment.

But the company did release a statement saying: “Our thoughts are with those who are impacted by this tragedy. We are cooperating with the local law enforcement. Since this is an active police investigation, we cannot confirm any additional details. All additional questions should be directed to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.”
