PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WWSB)-- Charlotte County officials confirm a major car accident on I-75 killed a man and injured several others on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
The accident, a car versus a semi truck crashed, happened at 6:08 pm on I-75 southbound just past Kings Highway and resulted in an ejection and fatality with two additional trapped.
Officials say the accident scene ended against guardrail of the left lane. Another driver, a 21-year-old male, not involved in the accident, stopped on the right shoulder of the interstate and attempted to run across to help. He was struck by a pickup truck and killed. The pickup then crashed into the original accident scene. The pickup was occupied by three males and none of them were injured.
The driver of the semi-truck was taken to Lee Memorial with traumatic injuries. Two occupants of the car had to be extricated because their car was wedged between the semi and pickup. Those two people were transported to Fawcett Memorial Hospital.
The southbound lanes of the interstate were shut down for a while until the occupants who were trapped were extricated and then one lane was reopened.
FHP is investigating the accident.
