SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - This morning while a Sarasota County School bus was at the intersection of 25th Street and Leon Avenue in Sarasota, an altercation between two students taking place on the bus. One of the students attacking the other student with a steak knife.
“I think it’s awful for a child to feel like they have to take a weapon for protection, because our school buses are supposed to be safe,” said Valerie Buchand, a Newtown activist who lives nearby.
The knife wielding student was arrested while the other was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. It’s not yet known what lead to the fight and the attack.
Buchand lives a few blocks from where this incident happened. She’s sad to hear about the injured student, but hopeful that more information comes out soon as to exactly what happened.
“I don’t believe that just happened,” said Buchand. "Something had to lead up to that and everybody wants to play the blame game but they need to get to the root of the problem instead of just locking somebody up.
The ages and genders of the students have yet to be released, but we do know the bus was heading to Oak Park School.
Authorities are continuing with their investigation. The Sarasota County School District says they aren’t commenting on this during the investigation.
