Small airplane catches fire while departing from Venice Airport

VENICE, Fla. (WWSB) - A plane burst into flames at the Venice Airport on Sunday.

Around 1pm, emergency crews were called to Runway 5 for a fully engulfed Piper PA-32 Cherokee 6.

Officials say while heading to take off, the pilot smelled smoke. He and his passenger got out of the plane and a short time later, it burst into flames.

Neither the pilot or his passenger were injured.

The plane had 80 gallons of fuel on board and HAZ-MAT crews were able to recover and mitigate 30 gallons of fuel at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The runway will remain closed until the investigation is complete, but all other runways and facilities are open.
