ELLENTON, Fla. (WWSB) - A five-vehicle crash on I-75 South in Ellenton Friday left one man dead and snarled traffic for hours as investigators examined the scene.
It happened around 7:30am near mile marker 225, which is close to the outlet mall. Troopers say traffic was slowing shortly after the Mendoza Road overpass when 29-year-old Christopher Garcia of Palmetto failed to slow, crashing his Toyota 4 Runner into the back of a Toyota Corolla.
Garcia’s vehicle continued forward, hitting a Chevy Silverado, which rotated and overturned in the grass median. Garcia’s vehicle then flipped and hit the back of a Dodge pickup, which was pushed forward, hitting a Buick LaCrosse.
Garcia’s vehicle came to a rest right side up in the grass median.
Garcia was killed in the crash. The four other drivers and their two passengers suffered minor injuries.
Two southbound lanes were initially closed after the accident. Though one of those lanes was later opened, the single lane closure lasted through the early afternoon, snarling traffic for much of the day.
Florida Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.
