SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The American Red Cross is in need of your help and has issued an emergency for all blood types.
The Suncoast Blood Bank in Sarasota said donations always slow down during the summer with students on summer break and snowbirds out of town. Joan Leonard is a Volunteer Coordinator with the local blood bank and said 25 percent of their donations come from students.
She said they need all blood types including platelet donations.
The center is also prepared to send donations to storm impacted areas with Tropical Storm Berry expected to make landfall in the Gulf Coast area by the weekend.
"Flooding will stop them from collecting up in those areas so we may get calls from disaster areas that cannot collect," said Leonard.
The Suncoast Blood Bank has partnered with store 7/11 to celebrate July 11th and they will have a blood drive in three locations in the 34243 zip code. That drive will be from noon until 5 p.m.
Other blood drive times and locations can be found here.
