Police: Man found dead at Lido Key Beach, investigation underway
LIDO KEY (WWSB) - A death investigation is underway at Lido Key Beach after police say one person was found dead.
On Sunday morning, Sarasota Police tweeted a man was found dead and it appears to be a possible drowning. The Criminal Investigation Department is present along with SPD conducting an ongoing investigation.
Some beachgoers question why no lifeguard was on duty when this tragedy happened.
“There’s no lifeguards, you can see the beach is packed," said Jeanne Katz, who arrived at the beach the moment rescue crews rushed to save the man.
She says she’s contacted the county before, asking why lifeguards begin their shift at 10 a.m., as she says people jump in the water earlier than that.
“Our biggest asset is our beach, if you’re not going to protect our beach, I don’t understand the whole thing,” she said.
ABC7 spoke to Scott Montgomery, Lifeguard Chief for Sarasota County over the phone. He told us his staff start their shift at 9 a.m. for prepping and training, before beginning their watch at 10 a.m. He did tell us one of his lifeguards at north Lido Beach arrived to work early, and rushed to lend a helping hand. He also told us this schedule is a common practice around the state.
While Sarasota Police continue investigating the cause of death, beachgoers like Katz says they’ll feel safer having someone watching over them from the moment the sun rises.
“At least there would have been a better chance,” she said.
