Sarasota County asking for public opinion on future of land near the celery fields

Public workshop for future of celery fields

SARASOTA (WWSB) -Sarasota County is continuing the conversation about the future of the lot of land next to the celery fields.

Tuesday, May 14th the county is holding a public workshop at The Church of Hope at 6 p.m.

At the meeting, people from the community can voice their opinions on what they think the county should do with that land.

The three pieces of land the county is talking about is around Palmer Boulevard and Apex Road. That area is next to the well known Audubon Nature Center and wetlands that is home to over 200 different species of birds. This has caused the public to be vocal about what happens to that land.

"A lot of people care about this area. This has become one of the most appealing areas in Sarasota County inland. Everybody west of the highway tends to head towards the beach, we tend to head to the celery fields," said Sarasota County resident Tom Matrullo.

At the workshop, Sarasota County staff will not be sharing the community proposals, nor the results of the study. The study is currently underway, and the results will be presented at a later date. The proposal from the Fresh Start people were previously presented to the BCC.

Some proposals the county received for that land include things like a community garden, a spa, and an outdoor sports complex.
