SARASOTA (WWSB) - Palmetto city leaders are taking another step to revitalize their downtown, hoping that visitors will stop awhile rather than just drive through.
The Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency bought nearly two acres to build a parking garage downtown.
A “For Sale” sign that’s been on the land for more than a year can finally come down. The city purchased the 1.93 acres for $925,000.
Several buildings stand on this property, including the abandoned auto repair shop, Slick’s Garage. The city decided it would purchase the land after conducting a study that showed Palmetto’s current parking would not support its future redevelopment goals.
The city has 1,527 parking spaces, but needs 2,990 spaces for their vision.
The Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency said the ultimate goal is to create a parking garage with first floor retail that fits with the historic buildings in downtown.
Surrounding business owners said this is great news.
“Yes, all very good news," said John Wright, owner and landlord of a nearby business. "If everything that they talk about happens, the parking garage, the multi-use buildings, the Complete Street project that they’re working on, it’s really going to change the look and feel of the entire area.”
The 1.93 acres starts on the corner of 4th Street West and 9th Avenue West and also includes a building one block north on 5th Street West.
