‘I want them to live their best life,’ says activity director before taking an elderly woman back to Anna Maria Island after 17 years

Visiting The Beach After 17 Years

ANNA MARIA (WWSB) - When is the last time you’ve been to the beach? For most of you on the Suncoast it was last weekend, but one woman’s last time was 17 years ago.

Mary Dupree who lives in Bay Vue Nursing & Rehab Center is seen above enjoying her time at the beach along with some of her friends. She lived in Ellenton for a while but after she was admitted into the nursing home she told us she stopped going to the beach.

The nursing and rehab’s center activities director, Marisa King told our Digital Team she was having a conversation with the ladies in her office one day and they expressed how awesome it would be to visit the beach. “They wanted to get out and enjoy the sun,” King said.

One of Dupree’s friends also said she hasn’t been to the beach in seven years. So after much reminiscing with the ladies King decided to set up a trip with the Manatee County Area Transit to Anna Maria Island.

Once King and the ladies arrived, they met some spring breakers along the way. “Taking the residents to the beach and seeing them happy feeds my soul and makes my heart smile” said King.

King told us she asked the spring breakers if they would like to give a helping hand in making the women’s expereince better. As you can see, they gave her a run for her money.
