SARASOTA (WWSB) - Rescuers raced to Stevenson Creek in Clearwater Friday to save a manatee.

FWC received a call from a resident who spotted a lethargic manatee in the creek. The animal is suspected to be an adult female manatee with a water craft injury that has not yet healed on its own.

The manatee is also missing its front left pectoral flipper from a suspected prior entanglement. Male manatees began surrounding the injured female to form a mating herd.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) Rescue Team along with FWC, ZooTampa and City of Clearwater personnel went to the scene to help. They separated the female from the mating herd by net, and brought her to shore by a specialized rescue boat. The City of Clearwater assisted in raising the animal by crane into a rescue van.

FWC transferred the manatee, which weighs 2,070 pounds, to ZooTampa for assessment and rehabilitation.
