Manatee County discuss ordinance to ban retail sales of puppies and kittens

Commissioners table decision on puppy mills

MANATEE COUNTY (WWSB) - Manatee County Commissioners are discussing an ordinance to ban retail sales of puppies and kittens.

A similar ordinance was passed three years ago in Sarasota County and will go into effect July 1st. Marla Spence, ABC7′s Manatee County Mobile Newsroom Reporter stood at the county’s administration building where county commissioners heard from the public on the ordinance.

Marla tells us the discussion on whether or not to ban retail sales of puppies and kittens is still on the table. Tuesday county commissioners voted 6-0 on researching ordinances like the one proposed and will come back in six months to make a decision.

An inside look on the meeting is shown above. Marla tells us many pet advocates came out to support the decision on a new animal shelter including the ban on dogs and cats in retail stores. Many pet lovers spoke out against puppy mills.

The owner of Petland also spoke out. Commissioners say the owner sent an email to commissioners stating how he’s bringing business to Manatee County after the ordinance was passed Sarasota County.
