SARASOTA (WWSB) - Deputies in Charlotte County say a purported diabetic attack led to the arrest of five people on drug charges.

The sheriff's office was called to Brooklyn Avenue in Port Charlotte on Sunday after reports came in of a man possibly having a diabetic attack. When they arrived, there were two people in the driveway, 33-year-old Russell Gerow and 26-year-old Jessica Vandegaart.

Gerow told deputies he was having a diabetic emergency. But deputies were suspicious when they found a clear baggie and several pills by his feet. And though he told deputies the bag in his hand contained his insulin, they tested the vials and syringes and say it tested positive for opiates.

EMS checked Gerow’s blood sugar and found it to be normal, but he requested to be taken to the hospital anyway.

Meanwhile, Vandegaart seemed nervous to deputies, who say she was shaking. They asked to check the bags she was holding but she denied deputies permission, claiming they belonged to Gerow, but she did give deputies permission to search her. Deputies say she had two syringes and a water bottle cap that tested positive for opiates.

When deputies brought the bags to Gerow, he told them they didn't belong to him and said, "Whatever is inside them there is a lot more inside the house."

Deputies checked the bags and found around 100 THC cartridge pens as well as prescription pills.

So deputies went to the home and spoke to 43-year-old Linda Robinson, who reportedly immediately told deputies they'd need a search warrant. Deputies conducted a protective sweep of the home, locating 41-year-old Shawn Sadoski and 23-year-old Alexis Robinson, and saw open pill bottles belonging to Alexis Robinson and cash bundled in rubber bands inside a room.

A search warrant was obtained and inside the home, deputies found methamphetamine, cocaine, THC vaping cartridges, Alprazolam, Hydromorphone Hydrochloride and marijuana. Additionally, smoking pipes, digital scales, and other drug paraphernalia were found in several bedrooms and the bathroom.
