MANATEE COUNTY (WWSB) -In honor of the Dr. Martin Luther Jr. holiday, The State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota is sponsoring its 6th annual community MLK Day of Service.
The day of service event isn't just happening along the Suncoast, it's a nationwide initiative to turn a day of rest into a day where people give back to their community, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did.
This year, SCF was given $190,000 from the state to award to charities, schools, and other organizations in both Sarasota and Manatee Counties so they could put together a service event for the holiday. An organization could be granted up to $10,000 for the project. Past projects include making landscape improvements to the boys and girls club of Sarasota and putting together school supplies for kids who need it. A goal of this event is to have people come together as a community.
"The essence of community is to give back so what we strive to do is where people may normally have a leisurely day of time off, we strive to get them excited about giving back to community and bringing people together, just for the good of community," said MLK Day of Service Organizer, Rodney Jones.
This year there will be 34 different service projects throughout the Suncoast.
