SARASOTA (WWSB) - Sarasota county in conjunction with The Florida Department of Transportation just made it safer for pedestrians on the Legacy Trail to cross over Laurel Road by creating an overpass.
Commissioners, county workers, and residents in the area all came out to see the ribbon cutting of this new overpass on Wednesday.
The overpass goes over Laurel Road and is 12 feet wide and 90 feet long. The idea behind this overpass is to provide a safe way for pedestrians to cross over the road while on the trail. This will benefit the 225,000 people who use this trail annually a spokesperson from FDOT said to be able to provide safety to so many people is a win.
"It's not the largest project the dot has ever participated in, but any time you can bring this kind of bike-ped safety and enhancements to the motoring public together at the same time, that's just a huge win, win," said FDOT's Director of Transportation Development, John Kubler.
This overpass also eliminated a traffic signal on Laurel Road, which will benefit drivers.
