VENICE, FL (WWSB) - One of the most popular fishing spots on the Suncoast is closed until further notice. The Venice Fishing Pier is too dangerous to be on after taking a beating from Hurricane Irma.
The city's public works crew walked out to the end of the pier to inspect it, after the storm and discovered the massive structure was moving.
"Somebody took a step and the whole thing shifted about half an inch so it was determined at that point that something went terribly wrong. It's probably the support underneath the decking," said Public Works Director John Veniziano.
The pier's concrete pilings are driven 50 feet below the sand and more inspections are needed to determine why the pier is so unstable and how it can be repaired.
