MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - With a high population of seniors, the state of Florida consistently has high rates of fatal car crashes. And one day after a triple fatality in Bradenton involving a senior driver, the debate about requiring more stringent testing for older drivers is heating up.

Sunday at the Sugar Creek Country Club, 79-year-old Doreen Landstra was backing out of a parking space when she lost control of her 2009 Chevy Tahoe and plowed through a crowd of seven people.

Three of the victims died as a result of the accident. Two victims are still in serious condition in the hospital and two were treated and released.

The country club has asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of friends.

But the tragic accident has many wondering if the state should implement driving limitations on older drivers.

“I'm very, very aware. I think people should be allowed to drive for as long as they are competent to do it safely,” says 85-year-old driver Marianne Dorr.

“I think it has to be gauged on each one individually, and if the state says you have to go take a test, go take a test. And if they feel like you are capable, then give them a license, because once your license is gone, your independence is gone,” says 97-year-old driver Gerry Kuiper.
