The devastation left behind from Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Leyte and Samar provinces in the Philippines, is incredible. Thousands killed and many thousands more left homeless as a result of extreme winds which ripped through the Island communities in the W. Pacific a week ago today.
It has long be know that the large scale warming and cooling of the central and east-central equatorial Pacific waters has a large impact on global weather. This warming and cooling goes by the names El Nino and La Nina respectively (see photo courtesy NASA) and flip flops between phases periodically. When the water is neither warm or cool we call it a neutral phase.

We have a system that may develop over the next couple of days in the Southwest Gulf of Mexico, or Western Caribbean, which is the remnants of the Pacific storm Barbara that made landfall in Mexico earlier this week.
OAXACA, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Barbara drenched a sparsely populated stretch of Mexico's southern Pacific coast with rain Wednesday after making the second-earliest landfall since reliable record-keeping began in 1966. It quickly lost strength over land but not before killing at least two people, including a man identified by local officials as a U.S. surfer.
