SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. -- A Suncoast man got a rare ride while boating in the Gulf of Mexico last week.

It happened off the coast of Venice.  James Bostwick posted this video to his Facebook page.  He saw a whale shark swimming by and decided to jump into the water and catch a ride.

He grabs the shark’s dorsal fin and away they go.

A spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says it is not illegal to do this.  However, a Mote Marine scientist told the Herald Tribune that this could disturb the shark and affect its feeding behavior.
