NEWPORT, OR. (WWSB)- According to many national news outlets one of the beloved characters on the TV Show M*A*S*H has died at his home in Newport, Oregon.

David Ogden Stiers played the arrogant New England surgeon Major Charles Winchester.    A family spokesman said that he suffered from bladder cancer.

On M*A*S*H* he was nominated for an Emmy twice as Best Supporting Actor in comedy or variety or music series.  He won a third nomination for his work in the NBC Mini series "The First Olympics: Athens 1896".

He also did a variety of voice work,  voicing many popular Disney movie characters.

In 2009 the actor revealed he was gay, and proud of it.  Because much of his work was considered family friendly, he had been reluctant to come out fearing a backlash.

The final episode of M*A*SH* attracted more than 100 million viewers.
