BRADENTON – The extensive renovations to McKechnie Field seem to be paying off, as Pirates officials say that Wednesday’s game set an all-time attendance record for the ball field.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in 10 innings in front of a record crowd of 8,439, according to Pirates Director of Florida Operations Trevor Gooby.

McKechnie’s off-season renovations included additional seating beyond the left field wall, the addition of a boardwalk across the outfield wall, and the replacement of every seat – 4,600 of them -- in the reserved sections.

The Pirates have an average attendance of 5,731 per game so far in 2013.

Toronto’s Mark Buehrle allowed one run while pitching into the fourth inning, but Carlos Paulino lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday with an RBI single in the 10th inning.

Paulino singled to center off reliever Tommy Hottovy, who hit two batters with pitches in the inning.

Buehrle gave up four hits and a walk in 3 2-3 innings.

Pirates starter James McDonald went 5 1-3 innings and yielded three runs on five hits and two walks. The right-hander struck out five.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Anthony Gose walked and scored from second base on a throwing error by third baseman Pedro Alvarez. Adam Lind and Mike Nickeas each had an RBI single for Toronto.
