TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' plans to wear their retro "creamsicle" throwback jerseys later this month have been dashed due to a new NFL safety rule.

The Buccaneers announced Tuesday that they have canceled plans to wear the throwbacks during their September 29th home game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The decision was made in response to the NFL's recommendations from the league's safety advisory panel, which calls for players to wear the same helmets throughout the season.  The Bucs' throwback uniform requires a white helmet with the old 'Bucco Bruce' logo, rather than their usual pewter helmets.

"Teams may continue to wear throwback uniforms under league guidelines, but players must wear their regular helmets," says NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy. "The outside of the helmet can be modified by removing or replacing decals, as long as it does not affect the integrity of the helmet."

The change does not affect the team’s Hispanic Heritage Day celebration which has been scheduled as part of the NFL’s Hispanic Heritage Month festivities.
