Sam Fuld has been overcoming challenges and proving doubters wrong his entire life - beginning at age ten when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Despite measuring in under 5’10”, Fuld became a star at Stanford University where he was twice named an All American en route to establishing the school’s career record for runs scored. After coming to the Rays in the 2010 trade that sent Matt Garza to the Cubs, Fuld quickly became a fan favorite earning himself the nicknames, “Super Sam” and “The Legendary Sam Fuld” for his heroic catches in the outfield and fearless defense. After missing much of 2012 while recovering from surgery to repair ligaments in his right wrist, Sam looks to have a bounce-back season in 2013 and return to his 2011 form.

Sam is very involved in the local community and this past February hosted the second annual Sam Fuld Diabetes Camp in conjunction with the University of South Florida Diabetes Center where 115 young diabetes patients received instruction from professional athletes – all Type 1 diabetics – in a variety of sports. Sam and his wife, Sarah, have two children, 3-year-old Charles and 1-year-old Jane, and another baby on the way. The couple had some fun this offseason learning how to surf.
