Matt Joyce is a true home-town boy. Growing up just outside of Tampa, Joyce began his baseball career in North Brandon Little League. He attended a number of Rays games as a kid, making many trips to the Trop to watch his favorite player Fred McGriff.
After winning the 2005 Division II National Championship at Florida Southern College, Matt was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. On December 10, 2008, he made his way back home after being traded to the Rays for pitcher Edwin Jackson. In 2011, Joyce got off to a torrid start and was selected to his first ever MLB All Star team. Matt looks to build off his previous success moving into 2013, and solidify himself as an everyday starting outfielder with the Rays.
Matt is especially involved in the Tampa Bay Community. This offseason he hosted his Third Annual Sweet Swingin’ Baseball Camp at North Brandon Little League and raised over $21,000 for the league he played in as a youngster. Matt has a black Labrador Retriever puppy named Eli he is especially fond of.
