With 63 homes runs in the last three seasons, Kelly Johnson has established himself as a premier power hitter from the second base position. Johnson began his career with the Atlanta Braves in 2005 as an outfielder. After an elbow injury sidelined him for all of the 2006 season, he spent countless hours in the offseason learning to play the infield and returned in 2007 as the Braves starting second baseman and leadoff hitter. Kelly’s best year came in 2010 with the Diamondbacks when he hit .284 with 26 home runs.

The Rays have been utilizing Johnson’s versatility as Joe Maddon has used him at second base and left field, along with several other positions. The Rays are the third team that will feature the double play combination of Yunel Escobar and Kelly Johnson as the two played together in both Atlanta and Toronto before coming to Tampa Bay in 2013. Kelly currently resides in Roswell, GA with his wife, Lauren, and their two sons, Cole (3) and Grant (1).
