MANATEE COUNTY - With the 2nd Annual Symetra Tour event at Sara Bay Country Club having come and gone, here’s a look back how it went.
This was the tournament’s 2nd year, but the first with title sponsor Guardian Retirement. And it was better right from the start because organizers already had one tourney under their belt, and the weather was drastically better.
"I feel like the Symetra tour is constantly improving. Our goal is to be the direct pipeline to the LPGA, and we are very similar. Our commissioner Mike Wan has put a lot of people in place that have LPGA experience, and it is run very similar," says tour communications coordinator Ali Kicklighter.
In the first round, there was some excellent golf played -- with one hiccup, as one of the tour's top players, Jaclyn Sweeney incurred a 1-stroke penalty for slow play.
Christine Song came in at 4 under par to be tied for the lead after Round 1. She was tied with France's Isabelle Boineau. “Oh, it was great. There were like a thousand fans out there yesterday, so that was great. They all get really into it. A lot of VIP’s out there. It's a great event and a great community to be in."
The two battled the whole weekend, and then into a playoff tied at 5 under. Song would win the 2nd Symetra tour event at Sara Bay, and tour personnel couldn't have been happier.
“So there was a playoff for the first time on the Symetra tour this year. Christine prevailed in a 2-hole playoff with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
