MANATEE COUNTY - The Symetra Tour will be back for a 3rd year in April. The LPGA feeder-tour is building a nice relationship with the Suncoast.
At Tuesday’s Guardian Retirement Championship luncheon, it was announced that the tournament will be played in April 2014 at Sara Bay Country Club.
It’s a very recognizable course to pros. "When I came here and people said it’s a Donald Ross course, I said what does that mean? Now I will never forget what a Donald Ross means. It means be beneath the hole 100% of the time," says tour player Emily Talley.
Earlier this year, the 2nd year of the Symetra Tour at Sara Bay, they had a title sponsor in Guardian Retirement, and the first playoff. "A lot of excitement for the fans. The players are very competitive; they are college All-Americans, the best players from 30 countries. The play is good. It is surprising to many, but we hope a lot of people come out to experience it," says tournament director Ryan Ronk.
Guardian will again sponsor the tournament in 2014. In fact, Guardian Retirement, after just one year, announced a 3-year extension through 2017 Tuesday.
“We thought that it was important to be part of the LPGA Tour and Symetra Tour to get our message out for the Guardian Retirement Championship, and we think our ideas fit well in this community," says Jim Lake, VP of national sales at Guardian.
"We love being here. We can feel good about being here for the forseeable future," says Ronk.
