SARASOTA - The high school softball regionals moved into the semifinal round Tuesday night, and two teams that have gone tooth-and-nail against each other over the past few years had to play each other again for the right to go to the regional final.
It was Sarasota and Braden River once again.
The Pirates beat Sarasota in the district finals last year, and Courtney Mirabella and her band of merry women were trying to do it again.
Mirabella did her part keeping the Sailors scoreless, but she met her match on the mound in the form of Sarasota's Clarrisa Lynch.
The teams matched zeroes through the bottom of the 6th inning. Mirabella got a one-out single to help herself, and then Hannah Loyer drove one the other way to the fence in left field. Mirabella was running from contact and scored easily on the Loyer triple.
Sarasota's Alyssa Price tied the game with a dramatic 7th inning home run, and after extra innings and a rain delay, the Sailors advance with a 2-1 win. They are headed to the regional finals Friday.
In other semifinal games, both Lemon Bay and Lakewood Ranch won Tuesday night to advance to Friday night's regional finals.
