SARASOTA - Tennis players around the Suncoast have, or will represent, their schools in the state tournaments that began Monday and continue through Thursday.

Emma Carey of Venice won the state singles title. Seven schools are at states, all vying for a state title -- like the Venice High volleyball team did earlier this school year.

The Venice Indians won a state title in the fall in volleyball, and Tuesday the Florida Dairy Farmers Association awarded their High School Player of the Year to Holly Mattmuller, and the Coach of the Year to Brian Wheatley, both of Venice High.

As far as tennis, the Riverview Rams are also going to states. They are sending a contingent from both the girls and the boys teams. "This will be our girls 6th year in a row going, and the boys 4th year in a row. They've won district regionals the last six years; it’s just a great opportunity to be representing Riverview High School again this year," says girls tennis coach Kathy Rosenberg.

Riverview’s Emily Schofield, the #1 singles player for the girls, won state her freshman year, but she is just one of several good candidates for a state title.

"It’s great. We've worked really hard this year, and it is great to see that all of our hard work has really paid off. It’s really fun going to states, too, and getting to see all the competition all over Florida," says Emory Conetta, who is ranked #2 in doubles and #5 in singles.

As for the boys, Austin Cruz leads the way for the Rams, but he is not alone in a state title possibility.

"Hard work pays off, so it is a good feeling to know that we reached our goals. But if you ain't first, you're last, so we definitely got some more stuff to do," says Michael Moore, ranked #2 in both singles and doubles.
