2013 H.S. Football Preview: Palmetto Tigers

PALMETTO, Fla. - The Palmetto Tigers have been winning consistently under head coach Dave Marino. This year, Marino has problem that every coach wishes they had: 2 talented quarterbacks.

The Tigers are coming off a 10-2 season in which the wide receiver position was their strength. This season there is new talent at wideout, but Coach Marino must choose between a talent in Jack Allison, or the returning talent in Chris Tuten at quarterback. “We've never, no matter where I have been, had 2 quarterbacks that are so good and so close. It’s going to be tough. It’s been tough and will continue to be because they are both getting better."

Whoever is the quarterback will be aided by the running game. The Tigers are deep at running back, thanks in no small part to Josh Hicks, who is headed to Rutgers next season, and is one of the top 10 all-around backs in the nation. "We are fortunate that we are deep in the running back corps. We are still working out things with our line, and we knew it would be a question mark. But we are looking for what will be the best combinations," says Marino.

Defense will be the driving force for this Tigers team, with so much talent in the defensive secondary. The leader of that secondary is Broddrick Waters. "We've got 9 returners on defense, plus some new guys, so I think we are suited and ready for whatever. We must keep working," says Waters.

“We knew that was going to be a strength, and that is what happened in the spring game, as well. Until our offense can get on track we will rely on defense, but the offense is coming along," says Marino.

The Tigers Kickoff Classic is at home against Riverview on August 23rd, and then they host Venice the following Friday to begin the 2013 season.
