SARASOTA, Fla. - The Sarasota Open at the Longboat Key Club and Resort began Sunday, and Monday was a continuation of qualifiers to make the main draw.

llija Bozoljac took on Fritz Wolmarans in a high-profile qualifier. Bozoljac was the difference in Serbia winning the Davis Cup, as he and his partner beat the #1 doubles team in the American Bryan Brothers. Monday he and Wolmarans went toe-to-toe in their qualifying match. “I’m really happy that I get used to the surface, and conditions are easy,” says Bozoljac.

Wolmarans had issue at one point with a call, but his argument was not convincing enough for the judges to make a change, and Bozoljac won the first set 7-5.

“My opponent played well, especially in the first set. I was defending two set points against me. I somehow pulled it out.”

More of the same in the 2nd set -- a fierce battle, but once again Bozoljacs won it, this time 6-4. “Broke early in the 2nd, and I think I was in control in that 2nd set.”

Bozoljacs is now in the main draw, and having already played 2 matches, his unsure whether that is a blessing or a curse.

“I played some matches already. I play somebody from the main draw; that is going to be their first match, so I’m coming with a little advantage,” says Bozoljac. “Conditions are pretty tough. It’s humid and pretty hot, and I came from completely different conditions.”
