SARASOTA, Fla. - The Cardinal Mooney Cougars began the season 6-1 in boys basketball. They lost a key component to last year's playoff team, but they have not missed a beat -- thanks in a big way to junior Ryan McMahon.

With the help McMahon, the Cardinal Mooney Cougars are out of the gates in a big way for the 2013 season.

"He's a very hard worker, on and off the floor. He puts an enormous amount of work in to try to improve his game," says head coach Stefan Gates.

McMahon has been leading the Cougars in points, assists, and steals, so he has been excelling at both ends of the court. He takes from the opponents and then gives it out to teammates, or scores himself. “I have always been known to shoot the ball, but I have been trying to diversify my game and become more into a scorer, and not just a shooter," says McMahon.

"He has a tremendous basketball IQ. He is a great ball handler; shares the ball really well, and passes the ball really well. He is an all-around player," says Gates.

With the loss of their star Antonio Blakeney, who transferred, McMahon has helped pick up the slack. He has been averaging 17 points a game with 6 assists and 4 steals, but he embodies the team concept. "Due to Antonio leaving, I have had to take on a different role. More as a scorer, whereas last year I was more of a role player, come off the bench, provide energy, provide defense."

"He loves the game so much and he works so hard at the game, and he is so multi-dimensional," sys Gates.

Congratulations to Ryan McMahon of Cardinal Mooney High School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
