Week 9 recap: Manatee comes from behind in thriller

BRADENTON - Just when you thought Manatee was going to lose their first game of the season, they miraculously come back and beat the 13th best team in the nation.

During the ABC 7 Game of the Week preview, we said this was possibly going to be the game of the year. It did not disappoint.

Manatee remains unbeaten (9-0), as they defeated the University School Suns 28-24. University took an early lead on a 91-yard screen pass touchdown on their first offensive play, then added to their lead after recovering a Manatee fumble and blocking a punt to go ahead 21-0.

Manatee didn't get on the board until late in the 2nd quarter but then took control of the game in the 2nd half, taking their first lead late in the 4th quarter and holding on for the win.

This was University's first loss of the season. No doubt, the 17th nationally ranked Hurricanes will move up in the polls after this one.

Manatee has already been awarded the district crown, but you have to imagine, the victory definitely feels good for the team and Coach Joe Kinnan.

Manatee ends their regular season next week at home, hosting Palm Harbor University.

Sarasota got a huge district win over Palmetto on Friday, 26-22, as the Sailors make a push for the playoffs in a crowded Class 7A-10. Next week, the Sailors host Lakewood Ranch, who lost to Riverview 27-10.  The Rams face St. Petersburg next week, with the winner earning a playoff spot as Class 8A-7 runner-up.
