SARASOTA - The Sarasota Sailors have had a slew of excellent quarterbacks in recent years, but this year they will need a new one to get the ball to their superstar wide receiver, Shawn Bane, Jr.
Gone is quarterback Hunter Dewitt to either Florida State or Florida International, so in steps Caulin McNeal for the 2013 season. "He is a real talented passer, hard-working kid, he's improved tremendously. He got plenty of great experience last year, so we expect not to miss a beat with him in charge," says sailors head coach Ed Volz.
McNeal's main job will be getting the ball to Bane, along with Dylan Cleveland, or otherwise handing the ball off to the tank: Rod Tullis.
"Well, I mean, I'm pretty comfortable with Caulin as our next QB. He will give me the ball. He'll throw some deep bombs. As long as he can get it to me we will be fine," says Bane.
Coach Volz is going into his 4th season as Sarasota’s head coach, so this is his first graduating class; the first seniors to have 4 years of Volz's system under their belts. "He runs this pretty efficiently, so I believe we can make the playoffs, if not go farther. Yeah, we play hard and we are going to have a great team this year," says Bane.
Volz knows he has an excellent coaching staff around him, but it also helps to have a good defense, and the Sailors should be better there than last season. "It’s going to be hard to be a junior and crack the starting lineup on our defense. We have some good experience and some good depth."
