2013 Spring Football Preview: Riverview Rams

SARASOTA - Riverview High head football coach Todd Johnson has two years under his belt, and is getting ready for his third. But as the Rams prepare for fall, they're also dealing with a few changes.

The Riverview Rams ended last season on a 3-game winning streak, and most of their skill players were returning for the 2013 season. "We've got some young, skilled guys who we think can step up and get the job done. They have been working hard on offense and right now trying to learn what we are doing so they can get the job done," says Coach Johnson.

Their starting quarterback from last season transferred to Venice, so now they are moving one of their most skilled players, Richie James, from wide receiver to the QB position. "I think we will be better in a positive manner…and Richie is doing pretty good. I can't say more than that. I am really proud of him. He really has stepped up," says running back Karan Higdon.

Even though he was phenomenal as a wideout and kick returner, the Rams feel James is their best option at QB. "We have always had guys behind Rich (at WR) that can also play the game as good as he can. They are really starting to step up, improving, and doing good, so we really haven't lost anything," says Higdon.

Higdon will return as a junior in the fall, and already he is making D-1 schools sit up and take notice. "Great all-around kid, and a great all-around player. He is what we are trying to build our program around. He is a guy that can definitely get the job done, so we are excited to have him back for another year," says Johnson.

The Rams travel to Bradenton to take on Southeast High next Friday night for their spring game.
