SARASOTA - The first thing visitors notice at Cardinal Mooney's spring football practice is their size. And that size should bode well for their 2013 season.

They call the guys in the trenches the "big uglies", but their size is anything but an ugly sight for Cardinal Mooney head coach Josh Smithers. “We've had a good off-season in the weight room. We have some good guys coming up from the JV, so we think our size up front on the offense will be better than last year. We still are a little thin up-front on the defensive side, but we’re getting there."

The offensive line will be protecting a rarity for the Cougars in quarterback Reese Vita. He is actually returning for a 2nd year under center. "This is the first time that we’ve had a quarterback come back two years in a row since 2007-2008, so it will be big having the same guy returning. He had a great sophomore year. He did a lot for us, and we’re going to put a lot on his shoulders running the offense," says Coach Smithers.

Last season, injuries to key seniors hurt the Cougars, but it will help them for the spring game, and as they head into their 2013 regular season.

"We have a pretty good running back returning in Demardre Patterson, and we also have the freshman, or soon-to-be sophomore Alex Sobczak, who got pulled up last year and did a real good job. So we think we have two really good running backs for the future."

Cardinal Mooney play Thursday night at home against Braden River for their spring game.
