SARASOTA - High school spring football games continue Thursday night. One of those games has Booker playing Palmetto, which will be Booker head coach Johnnie Jones' first spring game with the Tornadoes.
Jones played at Booker, and he even was the head coach last season; but he took over on the eve of summer practice, so now he has had some time with his charges. "We started out good. We want to finish good going into our summer workouts and conditioning so we can have positive feelings as we prepare for the fall."
Alex Riddle is gone at quarterback, but the Tornadoes have a few candidates who are battling for the job. "Drew Thompson, Jeremiah Henderson and Javarris Williams; none of them have game-time experience, so the spring is a huge part of us making a decision as we go into the summer," says Jones.
Marlon Mack has been a stellar running back, but he plays both ways. He is a defensive back too, and that position is preferable. “I would rather play DB; it comes to me more easy. I am a good running back, but I play DB," says Mack.
The Tornadoes have some talent to replace - as every year - but they are up in numbers from the past few years. “Last spring we had about 22. Right now we have about 40 that we have issued equipment to. Having certain guys, key guys, returning is always a plus, and that 2014 group has shown some leadership as far as they're working."
Booker plays at Palmetto on Thursday night at 7pm.
