BRADENTON - Living in the shadow of Manatee High School, times have been tough for Bayshore Bruins football in recent years. But the administration has reached into its past to improve the future.

Elijah Freeman, the new head coach at Bayshore, was a standout player for the Bruins back in the early 90's, and his desire is to see his alma mater get back to the days of old. “It’s been very exciting. I’m loving every minute of it. I’m hoping to bring a little enthusiasm and get these guys prepared for a great season next year.”

Freeman brings a strong work ethic, and a lot of enthusiasm---which is half the battle. “I’m trying to get them some confidence in themselves. They’re getting to know the staff; they know we have their best interests at heart…we’re just going to try to keep things moving forward as best we can,” says Freeman.

He has seen some bright spots in his first spring at the helm, but also some areas to build on. “It’s definitely some work. We don’t have great numbers out here, but the kids that have been showing up, they’ve been giving great effort every day. They want an opportunity to improve.”

Whether the Bruins improve in the win column or not, they will try to look more enthusiastic while attempting to do so. “We have quite a few athletes. We’re a little lacking in size, however. But the heart and the desire and the effort has been great,” says Freeman.
