SARASOTA, Fla. – Sarasota High School is entering its 4th year under head coach Ed Volz. They have returning talent, some new skill players, and high hopes for the 2013 football season.
Whatever the Sailors do this season, wide receiver Shawn Bane, Jr. should be in the middle of it. "What excites me the most is that we can actually win our district, and have fun all year for my senior year," says Bane.
Caulin McNeal will be the man charged with getting the ball to Bane, or handing the ball off to his talented running backs, Marque Upshaw and Justin Austin -- otherwise known as ‘Thunder and Lightning’.
"When you have skill positions like that, you'd better find a way, and he has done a good job of that. Whether it was filling in last season, or over the summer, he has done a good job in getting the ball to Shawn," says Volz.
Defensively, the Sailors are led by senior middle linebacker and captain Chris McKenzie. They will have an improved defensive line and secondary as well. "Experience on defense is a big strength, so the overall experience on the defensive side. I think we've got a great playmaker."
It is Coach Volz's 4th year, so everyone in the program has only had him as a head coach. He is excited about the possibilities for this season. "They have really taken the principles that we have tried to instill and made them their own. We are excited. We have a chance to be a good, solid football team as long as we stay healthy and guys do their jobs on a consistent basis."
