NORMAL, AL (AAMU Athletics) - Nearly 5,000 Alabama A&M fans turned out Saturday in support of Bulldog athletics at the annual Fan Day at Louis Crews Stadium.

The Maroon and White faithful were treated to face-painting, autographs, food, contests, food, music from the Marching Maroon & White and, oh yes, food.

It was all capped by a spirited football scrimmage that featured offensive fireworks and some stellar defensive play.

"We looked good in spots," said Assistant Head Coach Andy Fuller. "There are things we have to correct because at this point there are some things that that should be doing.

"But the guys' effort as great … that's all you can ask."

Quarterback Jaymason Lee guided the Bulldogs' pistol offense with three touchdown passes and engineered a 99-yard drive.

But he said it's a learning process for the offense with the new scheme.

"I'm still getting a feeling how the offense works," he said. "We have a long way to go."

The squad is a mix of veterans on the line and young receivers.

"The line did a great job of pass blocking and opening holes," Lee said.

"We've got some young receivers on the field but they're stepping up."

Defensive end Anthony Lanier sparked the defense with five sacks and said the unit aims to continue the Bulldog tradition of strong defensive play.

"We're still working on the chemistry," he said. "But we plan to keep the tradition of No. 1 defenses."

The Bulldogs open the season Aug.31 against North Carolina A&T at the 10th annual MEAC-SWAC Challenge in Orlando, FL. Kickoff is 10:45 a.m.  CST and the game will be televised by ESPN.
