Athletes of the Week: Venice Indians baseball team

VENICE - The Venice Indians have been commended, lauded and celebrated after winning their 2nd consecutive state title. And now the entire team is the ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.

After riding in fire engines for a parade in their honor Wednesday, the Indians had the honor of collectively being this week's athletes of the week for their work on the field, and in the classroom -- where they had a combined 3.3 GPA.

The Indians were the first Suncoast baseball team to win back-to-back state titles in 20 years. It is also the 3rd baseball state championship since 2007.

“They were very consistent. They did everything right on and off the field. They’re great student that worked hard in our community, and that’s what makes them so special. You have a great group of young men that care a lot about it and really pour into what we’re doing. That’s what makes it great,” says head coach Craig Falkner.

“It was awesome. It’s so special; most sports teams don’t even get to experience one, and we have two in a row. So it’s just awesome,” says pitcher Cooper Hammond.

Congratulations to our ABC 7 Athletes of the Week.
