Athlete of the Week Sept. 13th - Blake Keller

BRADENTON - The Manatee Hurricanes are still ranked #1 in the USA Today high school football poll, and their defensive front four is considered #1 in the nation too, or very close to it. Blake Keller is a mainstay on the line.

The ‘Canes as a whole, and their defense, helped cement those rankings with a huge win on national TV in their opening day win against Miramar on September 2nd. Keller was all over the place.

“He’s got strength, he has good size…he is 222 pounds, he is tall, he is about 6’ 2 ½’, and he plays extremely hard and he is a great technician,” says Manatee head coach Joe Kinnan.

On national TV, with no other games going on, Keller sacked the QB twice himself, and helped out on another on defense.

“I had a lot of my parent’s friends, my grandma friends, and some of my friends that live in other parts of the country, they all talked to me and said they saw the game. That was pretty cool.”

On special teams, all he did was block 2 punts; one in the first half, and one in the second half. On the 2nd block, he kept it himself and went in for a TD.

He is always in the mix. “I think his motor runs at a very high revolutions. He plays so hard, plus he is very athletic,” says Coach Kinnan.

“I think I just go hard every play, and get off the ball as fast as I can and just try and do my best every play,” says Keller.

He scored a TD last year in the playoffs, then another in the state championship win.

Blake Keller has begun this season like he ended last season, and that is why he is our first ABC 7 Athlete of the Week for the 2012-2013 school year.
